The comforting glow of a nightlight and the nostalgia of childhood toys are combined to create the light-based installation “Toy Box.” Composed of up to seven giant nightlights, each one is shaped like a different vintage toy plugged into a large constructed outlet. Motion sensors embedded in the front of each nightlight will activate the pieces, lighting up the nightlights when people pass in front of them. Each giant nightlight (between 3- and 5-feet tall) will be installed around Findlay Market, and when people walk in front of the sensors, the nightlights will turn on for a short time. The longer people interact with the sculptures, the longer the nightlights will glow. The focal point of each nightlight will be the cast-resin large replicas of classic popular children’s toys — paying tribute to Cincinnati’s history with toy making. Frosted-white large reproductions of the toys (i.e., a dinosaur, teddy bear, robot, etc.) will perch in the outlets, waiting for people to light them up! BLINK attendees can interpret this as a game to seek out and find all the toys in the “Toy Box” — in a sense, collecting them all!
