Applause is an interactive sculpture that contradicts the typical applause sign. Rather than the sign lighting up to cue the audience to clap, the viewer must initiate the action in order for the sign to illuminate. As the applause gets louder, the sign gets brighter, directly relating to either the amount of engagement or the size of the crowd. Because the sculpture operates only from the audience’s action, Applause transitions from being an object to being a performance: an act of appreciation or approval from the viewers.
